When I was a kid [couple yrs ago] my cousins and I used to shoot marbles out of a pipe using firecrackers for the propellant. We made 'zip' guns using the spokes and the spoke tension nut from bicycle wheels. We did a lot of other things I probably shouldn't mention. I have always kept the handles from brooms when the broom breaks or wears out. My stick 'fetish' most likely started in early childhood, but really escalated when I was in the Corps from the hand to hand training. I keep rattan sticks in various lengths all around me, and my kids and grandkids could be seen playing with them at any given time. I can hear some of them saying....."I like sticks, Grandpa.....just like you....". Handles have not been banned yet, and have been used as tools and weapons for centuries, albeit they are for close range. Sticks and handles can break with certain use, unlike rattan, but can also be fashioned into spears with screwdrivers, knives, etc. Look at the sticks they made into spears in the movie Braveheart and how they were used against the charging army.

You know, I will remember this forever, It will "Stick" in my mind, no pun intended!
Seriously, just look around your shop, you will be amazed at how many weapons you have without realizing it. If you want to make a spear that will stick when stuck, try this. Buy the largest shark fishhook you can find, straighten it out, leaving the eye in place. Drill a hole in the end of a stick the size of the eye about an 1-1/2 inches deep. I like a cedar broom handle with tapered end. At the top of the hole, drill through the side of the stick, a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of a steel pin or nail, the same size as the eye opening. Insert the straightened hook into the end hole, force the pin into the side hole. Using molten lead (adds weight), liquid steel or similar substance, fill in the gap around the hook shaft. Great for spear fishing and weapon usage. The pin prevents the spear head from pulling out of the spear. Other materials such as aluminum tubing works fine too and is more durable but require a little more work to fashioning head. If using aluminum, 1/2 inch or larger, be sure to close oposite end to prevent dirt and water from entering the shaft. Oh and if your going to use as a fishing spear, make sure you drill a hole in throwing end to attach a retriving line or prepare to go swiming.
Use a piece of rubber/plastic tubing to protect the spear head from damage and accidental sticking something that doesn't need to be stuck!

I have been a huge salt water fisherman all my life. I have made many 'sticks' using large fish hooks. Most of my gafs were homemade using a 16"-24" wooden rod [1.5" dia] with a screw thru the eye and then lashed the shank with nylon twine to keep the hook from turning.

OK, not a 'stick' thing...... A 3 foot piece of romex wire [12/2--12/3], the end bent back 3"-4" for a good grip, even lashed with twine. Or... A 3 foot piece of garden hose......and a 3"-4" wood dowel [stick ?---sorry] driven in one end to help grip it better. Again, it would be for 'close' use, but it will take an attacker down ! Especially if you hit them in the shins.

Hey, let's not forget the good ol' slingshot! Unfortunately, they don't have as many tires with inner tubes these days! But anything that has got a rubber elastic effect and can be tied-off between a tree limb/branch that has the shape of a slingshot, can be effective.

And we all have kitchen knives.......boning, butter, carving, etc...... Spears or hand to hand...... but even though it may not be a weapon, an alarm can be made with cans, forks, spoons, etc on perimeter strings. A fork will make a spear. Not a .45acp from a 1911.......but some defense in the right scenario. Never underestimate what you already have. Any strong item may be used as a kubotan.....or purchased for a reasonable price. www.naselfdefense.com/kubotans.htmI understand, this is mostly a hand to hand situation. Be imaginative, there are other uses.
