Being aware of your surroundings is probably the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do to protect yourself. Many attacks, like in parking lots could have been avoided if this simple task was adhered to. If you have kids walking with you, there already is a distraction. Keep them as close as possible, and orderly [holding hands, etc.] if that's possible.....but very do-able with discipline.
I see way too many people with the kids running wild in parking lots, and the parent is engrossed to the max......ON THE friggin' PHONE !!! $100-$200 worth of stuff in the cart and purses just sitting in the kid seat......very easy target/victim.
If the phone call is so important, stay inside the store until you finish the call.
With a small amount of thought....and a little effort, you can stay pretty safe.....just stay aware of your surroundings, and not just 20-30 feet away.

Lately, I see more and more folks walking down the sidewalks and shopping malls texting away, or reading texts as they are walking. Some even walk right into an intersection without noticing traffic. They really are setting themselves up to be robbed, or even worse.

Tunnel vision...side-tracked, caught up in it,..... and totally unaware of their surroundings. What if your wife and kids didn't come home that day...... because they allowed an attack on them by not watching their surroundings in the wal-mart parking lot...... and you got 'that' call......
