First and foremost select a weapon that you can handle and know or learn how to use it. Our choices may depend on many aspects of our lives ie: type of home we live in, the area we live in, the type of crime that occurs in our neighborhood and our willingness to use it. Basically, we have three choices, pistol, rifle or shotgun, all three are a good choice for different situations. If you can only have one, I suggest a pistol or shotgun, both very effective for home invasion. You might want to consider a separate firearm for your wife/husband. Amunnition, I'll leave for the next poster.

There is so much controversy over calibers.......it would fill the halls of the Library of Congress. Everyone has an opinion. Only you, and you alone, can determine what to have, why you have it, and when and if you need to upgrade it. A claw hammer is better than a #2 pencil......but if you only have a pencil........ A rattan stick is better than a 1911 Colt.....if you have no ammo. Whatever you have, just become very familiar with how you should use it safely. Even a cordless drill can cause you harm....if you are careless. Read, research, then determine what is best for you. Never hesitate to ask for help and assistance.

My particular firearm of choice is....firearms. As in more than one, like a hammer or screwdriver. One is good, but more than one is better because each type was designed for a particular use.
My 'go to' handgun has always been a revolver because I grew up with them, I watched John Wayne movies, and I liked how I hit my target with them. Yes, I have semi-autos, and shoot them regularly. My rifle of choice, yep, you guessed it,.....is a lever action. [Too many western movies while growing up] Yes, I have bolt and semi-autos and they have a definite use. Some specifically for 'long' range. Shotguns.....yessir ! Nothing beats a pump shotgun for home defense. And the gauge depends on the shooter. My little 12ga with Packmayrs is mild with low-brass birdshot......but change the loads to high-brass buckshot or slug, and you have a handful when you pull the trigger. Even a .410ga will work because of the SD ammo made for it today. And, yep,.......you guessed right again.......my home would not be complete without a good old side-by-side Coachman.....double-barreled, stage-riding, dirt- street-sweeping, crowd-controlling, two-triggered western-style shotgun.

Although, the wife has never shot my 12 gauge, she is wanting me to take her out to the farm to let her shoot it. This should be fun! I'll be sure she has a well padded shoulder for this first time experience. We both have our carry permits, and do. I find that living in these parts the weather is a huge factor in making the choice for your your daily carry. In summer is a Sig in my pocket, and in winter, well, it could be either my Sig P238 or my Taurus 9mm. Wife also likes the Sig, so I think I shall end up letting her carry the Sig P238, and I'll get me a new Sig P938 9mm These are great pocket carry weapons. In the meantime, she has a 38 special revolver. Now, back to the farm, I'm thinking that I should take a video of her first time squeezing off on my Mossburg 500. Although, I guess that could also be dangerous... to me!

;D Yeah, a video may be bad.....for you, and maybe multiple times. Now, if she shoots it like John Wayne, it may be a very good thing. If it bites her, or muzzle flips, etc. it may be bad for you each time she sees it. Men seem to have different views sometimes about 'what's funny' than what women see as funny. Around here sometimes, and I'm belly laughing about something, and I get that 'frown stare', I assume she doesn't think it's funny. It's usually followed by a "must be a guy thing" statement. I would still take the video though.

"Which gun is the best for.....?' You can go to ANY gun or preparedness forum and find this question asked a zillion times ! Anyone that has been there and read at least for five minutes, already has a million answers.....or should I say 'opinions'. No one can choose the underwear you like best.....for you. Sometimes, you just have to spend the $$$ to see if it's what you prefer. Many indoor ranges have a fairly broad range of gun types and calibers. Try them as much as possible if you are new to shooting. Also, go and hold a s**t load at the gun stores......you may be greatly surprised at how different each one feels in your hand, compared to how it looked on the internet, even with the great reviews you read. My advice on buying a gun until you get the one you like [or the ONES that you love...] ....don't buy, sell, trade,.......buy and keep, provided your wallet can handle it enough to assure your protection. I have regretted EVERY gun I have ever gotten rid of. EVERY GUN !

Oh, unless you are super rich.......in the beginning, don't go caliber crazy...... Keep your calibers similar. Example: Rifle in .44magnum-pistol in .44magnum Rifle in .357magnum-pistol in .357magnum......etc Today, with the craziness of hoarding and paranoia, I would not want to be a 'new to the shooting world' person. You are pretty screwed....right out of the gate. Maybe even more of a reason to keep your calibers of choice in alignment......especially if you decide to re-load your ammo.
